Geocache Description:

We found another benchmark disk, and decided to share our find by continuing the concept started by Geofogies in their cache "A Northbrook Benchmark". We know a lot of geocachers also enjoy finding benchmark disks, so here is a cache to combine the two.

The posted coordinates are for a benchmark near a bike path.  There is nearby parking, and it's a short walk to the final (around 1/4 mile).

When you look at the benchmark, you will see a short PHRASE across the top, and an identification CODE across the bottom in the form of one letter followed by two digits followed by one digit: A-BC-D.

To calculate the final North coordinates:

  • Take the two digit number BC from the CODE, reverse the digits to CB and square it (E.g. if the two digit number was 92, reverse it to 29, and square 29 to get 841). CB^2 = E.
  • The North coordinates are N 42° 01.E

To calculate the final West coordinates:

  • Count the number of letters in the first 3 words of the PHRASE and call this F.
  • Add the digits of the two digit number from the CODE BC: B+C = G.
  • Count the number of letters in the third word of the PHRASE and call this H.
  • F x G x H x 2 + H = I.
  • Add I to the posted West coordinates. (W 088° 19.[540+I])
