Geocache Description:

Howard Falls is one of the largest falls in Erie County, "that few have ever heard of". Another interesting history cache for Erie County.

The Howard Falls area of FranklinTownship, Erie County, PA, has been home to the Howard family for over 170 years. Throughout those years, seven generations of the family have benefited from the use and enjoyment of this property.

The Howard Falls Trust was created in 1992 by the Howard family to conserve and maintain the Howard Falls region. The Trust has acquired significant property surrounding the Falls, and manages the general area with the long-term intent to preserve the rural character and limit development.

Public access to Trust property is only by permission, and hunting and mechanized vehicles are never allowed. The deep ravines of the watershed north of Howard Falls are rich in geology and biodiversity. Access is granted into these areas for scientific study through the Howard Falls Research and Education Endowment.

In continuing to fulfill its mission, the Trust actively seeks to acquire additional properties along the general Falls Run watershed, north from Howard Falls toward its confluence with Elk Creek.

A visit to Howard Falls in 1891 as reported in the Erie Dispach in 1891 on a visit to the falls by the Natural Society.
....."Some time was spent looking at the waterfall. It is forty feet in height and sixty feet in breadth. The water cascades beautifully over the brink and down through a dark, narrow gulch about ninety feet in depth and pours itself into Elk Creek, singing its own glad song as it goes. Near the cascade is a mineral spring, clear, cool, and tasting fairly. It is said to be very healthy. Mr. Howard is not only an intelligent farmer and dairyman and quarryman, but also an intelligent geologist. He did all he could to make our visit as pleasant as possible, and he and his family have the thanks of the entire company."

My original idea for placement of this cache was too close to an existing cache. So...after finding this cache please walk south about 150 feet for the best view of the falls. It is not necessary to go into the woods here to find the cache.
