La chiesa è sita in una piccola isola a nord-est di Chioggia connessa alla città dal Ponte di San Domenico. L’isola apparteneva in antichità ai monaci benedettini, poi passò ai frati domenicani nel XIII secolo circa che nel 1287 vi costruirono un convento e la chiesa. L’attuale edificio ha subito numerose modifiche nel corso del tempo, in particolare ad opera dell’architetto Pietro Pelli a metà del ‘700. All’interno è curiosa la leggenda che accompagna il noto Crocifisso ligneo. Arrivato per mare a Chioggia dalle Marche a causa di una tempesta (così vuole il mito). I numerosi ex voto che si conservano all’interno della chiesa sono una testimonianza di grazie ricevute in particolare dai pescatori e della devozione dei fedeli. Di particolare interesse è il San Paolo di Vittore Carpaccio datato 1520. Appartiene alle ultime opere religiose eseguite dal maestro veneziano e si distingue per la puntigliosa invenzione iconografica. Il San Paolo eseguito probabilmente per la chiesa perduta di San Domenico di Castello, con la mano destra impugna la spada, il suo tipico attributo, mentre nella sinistra sorregge un libro aperto con su scritti due versetti della sua lettera ai Galati “Non io vivo, ma è Cristo che vive in me” 2, 20 “Porto sul mio corpo le stigmate di Gesù Crsito” 6, 17. Il piccolo crocefisso che gli trafigge il cuore è ben piantato e visibile a conferma dei versetti messi in mostra. La chiesa è ricca di opere d’arte di ottima fattura tra le quali si segnalano La pietà e i Santi di Leandro Bassano e Il Crocefisso che parla a San Tommaso d’Aquino di Tintoretto.

The church is located in a small island in the North-East of Chioggia and connected to the city by San Domenico’s Bridge. In the Middle Ages the island belonged to the Order of Saint Benedict and later, during the XIII Century, to the Dominican Order that built in 1287 a church and a convent. The building was radically modified, in particular by the architect Pietro Pelli, in mid eighteenth century. The legend associated to the wooden Crucified Christ is really curious: the tradition tells it came by the sea to Chioggia from Marche (a region located in the Central area of Italy) due to a storm. The several ex votos preserved in the church testify the faith of the fishermen. Really interesting is the Saint Paul painted by Vittore Carpaccio in 1520. It is one of the last religious works by the Venetian master and it is characterized by a meticulous iconography. This painting was made probably for the Church of Saint Dominic of Castello. The Saint Paul grabs with the right hand a sword, his typical feature, while with the left holds an open book where two verses of his letters to Galati are written: “I do not live, but it is Chirst who lives in me” 2,20 and “I wear on my body the stigmata of Jesus Christ” 6,17. The small crucified Christ tormenting his heart epitomizes the written verses. San Domenico’s Church is full of important art works as The Piety and the Saints by Leandro Bassano and The Crucifix that spokes to Saint Thomas of Aquin by Tintoretto.
