Bensonville was the name of property between Cox’s Road and Twin Road and, although the land has since been subdivided and developed, the original homestead still exists today. Bensonville is one of the oldest homesteads in the North Ryde area.
The property was purchased by Paul Benson and his family from Anthony Hordern (Hordern Pavillion fame) in the 1880’s. Paul was an ex-convict who was transported to Australia at the age of 14 for stealing a silk handkerchief valued at 10 pence. Paul bequeathed the land to Edward (one of his 12 children) who subsequently built the house in 1887-88 on the elevated orchard estate. It remained in the family until 1956 and in 1985 the land was subdivided and the brick house was left on an 889 sq m battleaxe block.
Note: Unfortunately the homestead is on private property but the cache has been planted in a nearby park (Booral Reserve). Please do not enter the private property to catch a glimpse of the house, I have provided a photograph in the description.
