Geocache Description:

This is the end of the line, literally if you want to take a ride on one of the local steam engines.

Approximately 3 kms of track was laid back in 1878.  The track would eventually go all the way to Mt Somers and then onto Springburn and was used primarly for the transport of lignite coal and lime.

For more information see this website http://www.plainsrailway.co.nz/about.php

Further up next to where the line used to be is another cache http://coord.info/GC1521E

S 43° 52.755 E 171° 38.700  was the location of anther cache that was placed with permission on private property  at an old platform / loading area next to where the train tracks would have been.  I believe the area was cleared to make way for an irrigation dam.
