Geocache Description:

Aros Pier

Aros Park is one of the attractive locations around Tobermory. The vehicular entrance to the park is only half a mile from the centre of town, from where it can also be reached by a very scenic footpath starting at the car park at Ledaig.

Aros Park is maintained by Forest Enterprise, who have kindly given permission to place caches, and the area has been developed as a recreational woodland. The park is on the site of Aros House, and the Allan family developed the grounds during the period of 1874 to 1959.

In 1959, the Forestry Commission bought much of the estate, but the House was sold to a private individual who stripped it of all valuable materials then left; leaving the Forestry Commission with a problem: what should they do with a property no one wanted?

In 1962, the army was called in to demolish the place for safety reasons. Much of the stone was used to make the car park. The front doors of the house are now the doors of Tobermory church.

In 1969, the Forestry Commission reopened the grounds to the public. The loch in the middle of the park is artificial and created as a feature, but also as a power source for the nearby mill. Today, the loch still serves two purposes: one as a very attractive landscape feature, and the other as a fish farm. This is a lovely place to come with young children for a picnic, or just to amble around the park. There are more caches in the park, but close by is another cache (GC33YA1: Mull: Lochan na Guailne Duibhe).

The cache is in a tricky little situation, and at a spot popular with muggles. Take great care when retrieving and replacing the cache; it's given T4 for a reason. Ascend to the cache from the landward end of the pier itself.
