Zo luidden de krantenkoppen uit die tijd. Niet alleen Maastricht, maar ook heel Sittard loopt uit als filmheld Clark Gable en de crew in 1953 op de Markt zijn voor opnames voor het romantische oorlogsdrama "Betrayed". Er zijn nog maar enkele Sittardenaren die deze gebeurtenis in levenden lijve kunnen herinneren. Clark Gable en Lana Turner waren in die tijd net zo beroemd als Brad Pitt en Angelina Jolie heden ten dage.
De film "Betrayed" gaat over een kolonel van de Nederlandse geheime dienst die in het verzet verzeild raakt en na gevangenneming door de Duitsers naar Engeland weet te ontsnappen. Clark Gable speelde de hoofdrol van verzetsman Piet de Winter. De opnames waren op verschillende plaatsen in Nederland. In september 1953 streek de opnameploeg van MGM neer in Limburg. De filmploeg verblijft gedurende deze dagen in een hotel in Gulpen. Voor de opnames wijkt men uit naar de markt in Maastricht en Sittard. Lana Turner is bij deze opnames niet aanwezig en blijft in het hotel in Gulpen. De opnames in Sittard worden vanaf het balkon van Hotel "de Kroon" genomen. In de openingsscene/optiteling van de film kun je duidelijke Hotel "de Kroon" en de Sint Michielskerk herkennen (zie de still verder in de beschrijving of bekijk de officiele trailer elders op internet). Na de opnames neemt Clark Gable nog een drankje in het hotel en praat met nog enkele aanwezigen. In de fotogalerij van deze pagina kun je nog een originele snapshot zien met op de achterkant een schrijven aan het team van MGM door een van de Sittardenaren.
Na successen als "Mutiny on the Bounty" en "Gone with the Wind" waren de recensies over "Betrayed" niet erg positief. Het was dan ook de de laatste film die Clark Gable maakte bij MGM.

Not only Maastricht, but also the citizens of Sittard went out to see a glimp of movie star Clark Gable and crew on the marketsquare for a shooting for the romantic war drama "Betrayed" in 1953. There are only a few citizens left who can remember this event. Clark Gable and Lana Turner at that time were as famous as Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie today.
The movie " Betrayed " is about a colonel of the Dutch secret service gets entangled in the opposition and after capture by the Germans he escapes to England. Clark Gable played the lead role of resistance fighter Peter Winter. The recordings were on different locations in the Netherlands. In September 1953, the MGM film crew came to Limburg. During these days the crew stayed in a hotel in Gulpen. For the recordings it deviates from the hotel to the market in Maastricht and Sittard. Lana Turner was not present at the shooting and stayed at the hotel. The shoots in Sittard are taken from the balcony of the Hotel "Crown". In the opening scene of the movie you can clearly recognize Hotel "Crown" and St. Michael 's Church (see the movie still further in the description or watch the official trailer elsewhere on the internet).
After the shooting Clark Gable takes a drink at the hotelbar and talk to some attendees. In the photo gallery from this page, you can still see the snapshot from the balcony and on the back a letter is written to the team of MGM by one of the inhabitants of Sittard . After successes like "Mutiny on the Bounty" and "Gone with the Wind," the reviews for "Betrayed" were not very positive. It was also the last film for MGM by Clark Gable .
