Geocache Description:

White Rock overlook is a very beautiful place to hike and will not be disappointed. It is made up of many different geological features that include sandstone, limestone, shale and Quartzite rocks. Below you will get a lesson about this area and just a small amount of its many features. Hope you enjoy the lesson as much as you will the hike.

It is to be said in this description starting out that this is Cumberland Gap National Park and nothing is to be removed from National parks and to abide by the rules during the time here. Bears have been active in the park so no food should be left unattended and dogs should be on a leash. A permit is needed from the main parks visitor center if planning on camping.
White rock overlook and cliffs is named after white quartzite pebbles imbedded in sandstone. Quartzite is a Metamorphic rock that is formed from sandstone under pressure. The area of the over look was at one time under a shallow ocean. This ocean at one time had animals with calcium rich shells such as coral which helped formed the Sedimentary Sandstone, Shale and Limestone visible.
This is a picture of some of the Quartzite that is embedded into the sandstone present on the side of the overlook as your walking up to the overlook. There is a difference in Quartzite and Quartz in that Quartzite is a metamorphic rock formed from sandstone where as Quartz is formed from high temperatures and pressures from silicon dioxide. Hope you enjoyed the short lesson in how the overlook was formed. Now for the questions and answers. 1. Are there Quartzite pebbles in the rock at ground zero of the coordinates? 2. What kind of rock(s) is/are present at the coordinates? 3. What are the three basic type of rocks and what kind(s) is/are found at the coordinates?
