=============================================================

The preserve honors Louis W. (Lou) Campbell, a well-known Toledo naturalist, outdoor writer, and pioneer of preservation in the Toledo area.

Campbell, who died in 1998 at the age of 98, advocated for the preservation of the Oak Openings, starting in the 1930s when he was an outdoor writer for the Toledo Times and president of the League of Ohio Nature Clubs. He was regarded as the region's foremost naturalist for his study of birds in the Oak Openings as well as the Lake Erie marshes, the subject of an authoritative book he wrote with his daughter.

Campbell began researching and documenting the bird population in the Toledo area in 1926, and in 1940 he crafted a comprehensive guide called The Birds of Lucas County, which was published by the Toledo Zoological Society. In 1968, his updated and revised text called Birds of the Toledo Area was published by The Blade.

Campbell also wrote more than 45 articles for prestigious scientific publications, such as those of the American Ornithologists' Union and Wilson's Ornithological Society.

========================================================

The posted coordinates are for the small parking area, information kiosk, and trailhead for the 2.3 loop trail. Do not attempt to enter the Preserve from any other location.

You must stay on the trail. Bushwhacking is neither allowed nor necessary. The Preserve closes at dark. You may see an obsolete sign requiring a permit for entry; however, the Preserve is now open to the public. This cache placement was approved by the Ohio Division of Natural Resources.

This is an"old school" cache that will require a reasonably long hike and a little counting. It is NOT a Park&Grab. You will have to walk over two miles, but the journey is well worth it. We have very few undisturbed locations like this remaining in the area.

Now for the task:

At stage #1 find a bridge. Count the number of wood planks making up the surface of the bridge. Write it down.

At stage #2 you will find an overlook platform. Count the number of vertical posts holding up the railing. Write the number down in sequence next to the numbers you already have.

At stage#3 find a medium sized sign with two full words. Write down the number of letters in the first word then the number of letters in the second word.

Also at stage #3 is a smaller sign on the reverse. Write down the number of letters in the first word then the number of letters in the second word.

You should now have a sequence of 9 digits.
