Geocache Description:

Cammo'd plastic nut container just off the NID access road about 100 feet downhill from the Cascade Canal. Don't go past the water tank. Easy grab once at GZ. The cache contains some trinkets and toys for kids to swap.

From the 1860s onward, a number of underground hardrock gold mines operated in this part Banner Mountain. Some of the nearby roads — Big Blue, Butterfly, Mayflower and others — are named for these mines. Remnant abandoned structures from the Gracie Mine can be found near the corner of Gracie and Big Blue roads.

Detailed descriptions and output statistics of the Banner Hill District mines can be found in "The Gold-quartz Veins of Nevada City and Grass Valley Districts, California" (1896, U.S. Government Printing Office) by Waldemar Lindgren. The book can be found and read online.
