• Upstream (creek) from the posted coordinates. Step up and walk carefully on the concrete, then into the old ditch about 45-50 paces from the current canal.
• Man-made right angle.

PACIFIC YEW (Taxus brevifolia)
The uncommon Pacific yew tree is abundant in this area of Little Deer Creek. With foliage that resembles a redwood, the evergreen yew typically grows in the shady understory of taller deciduous trees in cool, moist habitat.
In 1967, the National Cancer Institute discovered that the bark of the yew tree produces a chemical paclitaxel, or taxol, that is a cancer-fighting mitotic inhibitor. It was later discovered that fungi in the bark are critical to producing this natural chemical.
The discovery of an important natural cancer-fighting drug in a somewhat rare plant has been used as an argument that rare and endangered species of plants (and some animals) may have unknown value to man, and therefore should be saved for reasons beyond simply keeping a species from becoming extinct.
