Geocache Description:

The old road bridge in the little town of Wakkerstroom. Over 120 years old and declared a national monument, is still in use today. The bridge now leads to the Wakkerstroom wetlands reserve which is welll worth a visit for bird watchers.

The erection of the bridge was comissioned by the Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek as a result of a petition by the inhabitants of the Wakkerstroom district. It was designed by the ZAR's department of public works under the direction of S.W. Wierda and completed by A. Klute in 1893.

On 24 May 1904 the first black Zionists in South Africa were baptised here in the Martinus Wessels stream by D. Bryant.
