"A Quart of Milk from the Bailey House Saved the Nation"
During the time that Ulysses Grant was growing up in Georgetown, he frequently visited the Bailey home. He often bought milk from the Bailey's and was acquainted with Bart Bailey, a boy of his own age. While home for Christmas in 1838, Grant went to the Bailey home to purchase milk and overheard Mrs. Bailey reading a letter from her son, Bart.
Bart was describing his failure at West Point military Academy and he would soon be coming home. Seeing this as an opportunity to get an appointment to West Point, Grant immediately ran through the woods to the home of Congressman Thomas L. Hamer. There Grant asked if he could have the appointment to West Point if Bart Bailey failed to complete the course. Even thought Grant's father, Jesse, and Hamer were political enemies, Hamer agreed to give Grant the appointment being impressed by his courage and determination.
When the official word came, Congressman Hamer, true to his word appointed Grant to West Point and thus began his illustrious military career. Therefore, "a quart of milk from the Bailey house saved the nation."
