Geocache Description:

This is an easy find (in a spot chosen by two mini-cachers) in Hartley Wintney, Hampshire. The coordinates will lead to the fringes of what is locally referred to as Oak Common, and officially named ‘Mildmay Oaks’. Aside from tree roots, the grassy common area and stony paths are reasonably flat. Due to surrounding tree cover, coordinates may be slightly out, but within 10m or so.

This is a small/medium sized cache containing a selection of small swappable items and from time to time, our new trackables will be starting their journeys here. Stealth and consideration are required owing to the close proximity of muggle residences. The public car park is a short walk away. It is accessible from the High Street, with its cafes and antique shops. Check waypoints for car park coordinates. Free parking (some of which is time limited) is available on surrounding roads, all within easy walking distance.
THE HISTORY OF MILDMAY OAKS
Situated in North East Hampshire, Hartley Wintney is a rural village with a population of approximately 5000 people, a wealth of history, surrounded by idyllic countryside. In 1805 Admiral Collingwood, who was in command of the Navy after the battle of Trafalgar, was appealing to landowners to plant oaks: “What I am most anxious about” he wrote “is the plantation of oak in this country. We shall never cease to be a great people while we have ships and we cannot have ships without timber.” Lady Mildmay, who had become Lady of the Manor in 1786, seems to have responded to his appeal by instructing her steward in Hartley Row to plant out acorns. From these grew the now famous Mildmay or Trafalgar Oaks. They provide Hartley Wintney with its most impressive and historic feature and are believed to be unique – despite extensive research it has not been possible to find another surviving regimented plantation of Oaks planted in this country at that time.

Thanks to Hart DC site rangers and Hartley Wintney parish council for permitting this cache.
Congratulations to Callcache for a FTF less than 20 minutes after being published!
