Grapes of Wrath Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

ottergirl_fcl: Cache container has been totally destroyed. Hoping that a passing dog had some fun with it as this would be the best way to go! Have no other suitable container so will sadly have to archive.

Many thanks to all who visited this quirky container!

Geocache Description:

An interesting cache container stashed away just off a path between Tinker's Hill and the bridge under the Railway near John Daniel's Playing fields. I walk Paddy the geoterrier past this spot quite frequently and thought it was a good place for a cache. It can link to the nearby "Forgotten Foot Path" series by Coedmieri and also my "Tinker's Hill" series. Take care - GZ is a little exposed and can be quite muggly with passing dog walkers and horse riders.

The Grapes of Wrath is a novel published in 1939 written by John Steinbeck. The book won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction. It is set in the Great Depression and centres on the Joads, a family of tenant farmers from Oklahoma. They lose their livelihood because of drought, agricultural change and economic downturn, which causes them to be driven out of their home when the bank repossess. Like many other displaced Oklahoma families trying to escape the terrible conditions in the ‘Dust Bowl’, the Joads set off for California to seek jobs, land and a better future.

The book has been studied in American High schools due to Steinbeck’s accurate depiction of this period of American economic history. A film version starring Henry Fonda was made in 1940, directed by John Ford.

John Steinbeck was born in America on 27 February 1902. He wrote sixteen novels, five books of short stories and six non-fiction books. His most famous works apart from The Grapes of Wrath are Of Mice and Men published in 1937 and East of Eden published in 1952. In 1962 Steinbeck was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature for “his realistic and imaginative writings, combining as they do sympathetic humour and keen social perception".

The title ‘Grapes of Wrath’ is from the second line of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic":-

Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord:
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored;

(This tune is more commonly known as ‘Glory Glory Man United’ in our household!)

Please take care when opening and closing the cache container. Ensure that everything is 'lined up' when you close it to try and keep it water tight! Please rehide it well. I may put it in a camo bag when winter approaches.
