Tommy Cooper was a much-loved and greatly admired comedian and magician who worked from the late 1940s until his tragic onstage death in 1984, although he was particularly popular in the 1970s and 80s, when he was regularly on television. He combined skilful stage presence with great comedic timing to produce a persona of an incompetent magician, despite being very respected by many 'serious' magicians. He had a great personality and an unerring ability to deliver fantastic one-liners in his own unique fez-wearing style. He was a truly funny man, who had the ability to make many people laugh simply by being on stage, or even just by thinking about him. He was one of the first to use his style of comedy so effectively, and has now been copied so much that we've possibly forgotten how good he really was.
"My doctor told me to drink a bottle of wine after a hot bath, but I couldn't even finish drinking the hot bath!"
"Gambling has brought our family together. We had to move to a smaller house."
"I said to the doctor, 'Can you give me something for my liver?' He gave me a pound of onions."
