Union Chapel Methodist Church
Union Chapel Methodist Church was formed in 1885 and was located on what is now called the Union Chapel Road. According to a map from 1911, the church stood near what is now Strickland Subdivision and Northcliff Drive at the top of the hill on Union Chapel Road. The church relocated to the Crabbe Road (Highway 69) in 1911 with a wooden structure that served the congregation until November 1934, when on a cold Sunday evening a traveler passing by shouted, “The church is on fire.” The group meeting at the church that evening were able to save the pews, bibles, hymnals and the alter rail; the remainder of the church was lost. The next spring a new church was built, a wood frame building, painted white and equipped with kerosene lamps that hung from the walls. This building served the congregation until 1959 when plans were made for a new structure. The new building was dedicated March 12, 1960, and in 1967 a wing was constructed for classrooms.
On the south side of the church is a small cemetery. In the cemetery is an unmarked grave for an unknown child. Next to the child’s grave is the grave of Berry Wesley Hall who was likely the mother of the child buried next to her. The marker for Berry Wesley notes her husband’s name, John Miller Hall and a date, likely his date of birth. He apparently is not buried here, but his name is on his wife’s marker. Neither Berry Wesley Hall nor John Miller Hall were members of the Union Chapel Methodist Church; however it was requested that they be buried on the church property.
