Geocache Description:

If you enjoy a bushwalk and an old fashioned "box in the bush" type hide then this is for you.

This cache has been placed near the end of the Long Trail. On the way to GZ you will have enjoyed a bushwalk on a (mostly) level maintenance trail. With luck you will have seen some local wildlife. Near GZ are some great rock formations.

Long Trail is named after the historical Long Trigonometrical Station (or "trig") which was constructed in 1882 by Thomas Charles Swannell, a piling overseer in the Department of Lands. At that time there was no track - he and his team would have brought their equipment in by water and climbed up the hill. Continue 300 metres past GZ and you can see the trig through the bush, 20 metres west of the track. It is likely that Swannell chose the name "Long" but it is unknown why he chose that name.

Continue another 700 metres past the trig to the end of Long Trail and you can get really nice views of Cowan Creek and Looking Glass Bay and a great place for a picnic lunch.

Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park was dedicated as a public reserve on 14 December 1894. It was the second National Park in NSW (the Royal National Park near Sutherland was established 15 years earlier). On 12 July 2006, Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park was added to the National Heritage List.

The walk is a 12km return journey, a total of around 2-3 hours walking. This geocache has been approved by the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage and complies with their geocaching policy, meaning no swaps or swag. The container is a 1.2 litre sistema with a logbook and pen.

Other important information about the National Park is here:

- Park safety messages; and
- Fire, floods and park closure updates; and
- Park information pages.

Free parking is available at the end of Cullamine Road (see waypoint).

Sorry, no dogs allowed on the Long Trail. Bicycles and horses are permitted though! Makes for a nice ride combining this cache with Wilkins and Cowan.

Did you know that NSW has a geocaching association? Geocaching NSW aims to enhance and improve the activity of geocaching and holds regular events where geocachers meet to enjoy their common interests. A link to the website can be found here.
