Geocache Description:

Een snelle oppikker langs een onbekende herdenkingsplaats.

Op 21 oktober 1944 bereiken eenheden van de Britse 49th (West Riding) Infantry Division Loenhout en Wuustwezel vanuit Brecht. Zij zochten aansluiting met de Canadezen die oprukten vanuit Brasschaat in de richting van Kalmthout en Essen. Het hele manoevre had tot doel de Duitse troepen verder van de Schelde te verdrijven zodat de geallieerde schepen de Antwerpse haven veilig konden gebruiken. De Duitsers wilden dit verhinderen en lanceerden een tegenaanval vanaf de Nederlandse grens richting Wuustwezel. Dit leidde tot felle gevechten die in de geschiedenis van de 49 (WR) Inf Div gekend staan als "The Battle of the Stone Bridge".

De brug over de Weerijs aan de Loenhoutseweg was de enige stenen brug en strategisch belangrijk om het zwaar materiaal over te zetten. Na drie dagen van hevige gevechten werd de tegenaanval gestopt ter hoogte van het monument voor "The Polar Bears". Bezoek het monument en log tevens GC2KYMP.

On October 21, 1944 troops of the 49th (West Riding) Infantery Division reached Loenhout and Wuustwezel from Brecht. They sought a connection with the Canadians who were marching from Brasschaat in the direction of Kalmthout and Essen. The aim of the operation was to chase the German troops from the Schelde and ensure safe use of the Antwerp harbour for the allied forces. The German forces launched a counter attack from the border of The Netherlands in the direction of Wuustwezel. This led to heavy fights that are known in the history of the 49th (WR) Inf Div as "The Battle of the Stone Bridge".
The bridge over the Weerijs was the only stone bridge and very important to cross with heavy equipment. After three days of heavy combat the German troops were stopped at the place where the monument for the Polar Bears was erected. Visit the monument and find also GC2KYMP.
