Geocache Description:

Reflection of Loss of Lives, Livelihoods and Living in Neighbourhood is an installation by Peter Majendie, standing on a vacant lot in the heart of Christchurch. The 185 white chairs each represent one of the 185 lives lost in the 2011 Christchurch earthquake.

Each chair, just like its owner, has its own distinct personality, with the installation including armchairs, dining room chairs, a wheel chair, and even a baby capsule. The 185 square metres of grass that the chairs sit on represents new growth and regeneration – something which you can see and feel across the whole city. The artist’s statement poetically reminds us all that the ‘installation is temporary – as is life’.

As you pass by here, take a moment to pause, and think of those 185 people. The cache is not designed to have you hunting for ages, but rather to bring you to this place. If you can't figure out where the cache is straight away, just refer to the explicit hint, as this is a place of reflection.

And just to note, you are allowed to touch the chairs - if you go over to the info board, you will note an invitation to actually sit on them. The area is worth a read. There is also a notebook where you can write your thoughts on the earthquakes.
