Cairn – definition – noun • a mound of rough stones built as a memorial or landmark, typically on a hilltop or skyline.

We have several stone cairns in Niagara Falls to commemorate a variety of events. This is one of them. This cairn was originally in another location but was moved to the location it is found today.

This cairn is to commemorate a hotel in Niagara Falls that had two dates that it was built (1821 and 1840), due to a fire. This hotel was built where the Oakes Hotel currently stands. The Pavilion Hotel was a white wooden three storey structure, the largest hotel in Canada or the United States at that time! After the fire, it never was able to regain its celebrity status, partially due to the building of other impressive hotels nearby. On April 26th, 1865 the Pavilion Hotel burned again and it was not rebuilt.

TO FIND THE CACHE: (Assuming a=1)

Convert the top line on plaque on East side of cairn to numbers + 3. **This will be a three digit number - Divide this number by 1000. We will call this number X.

To find NORTH - SUBTRACT X from the original NORTH coordinates:

Convert and add the first word on line 6 and first word on line 7 on West side plaque to numbers. ** This will be a three digit number - Divide this number by 1000. We will call this number Y.

To find WEST - SUBTRACT Y from the original WEST coordinates:

**UPDATE: 1 of the plaques is missing and it is now attached as a pic to the cache page. Use it to get the necessary info once you figure out if it is the East or West plaque!
