Geocache Description:

Obsolete Technology

Obsolete Technology: Slide Carousels

Obsolete Technology: Slide Carousels

A carousel slide projector is used to project slide photographs and to create slideshows.

A circular tray holds several 35 mm slides (usually 80 or 140). The tray has a metal plate on the bottom with a small opening to pass a single slide to the projection gate below it. The projector body contains a motor which rotates the plastic main body of the tray (containing the slides) while the metal plate is fixed with the opening over the projection gate. As the tray is advanced, a reciprocating mechanism pushes the currently loaded slide back out into the tray, then the tray is rotated, dropping the next slide into position between the light source and lens. A slide show is created by displaying a series of still images on a projection screen.

The Kodak Carousel projector, a common model of carousel projector, was discontinued in October 2004.

Questions for geocachers:
Have you ever watched a slide show from a slide projector? Do you still have boxes of slides somewhere in your home? (We watched slide shows growing up, and my parents still have their boxes of slides. They have, however, had them all converted digital format).
