This cache is a micro cammo screw top container, placed on a public footpath near some of Bury St Edmunds wartime defences.
In 1940 Bury St Edmunds was designated as a nodal point (within the home defence plans) and, in the following months, was fortified with a tank ditch that surrounded the entire town. Some of the ditch was formed from natural features, the river Linnet being one such feature. In other places a ditch was dug. All the entrance points to the town were covered by strong points. From the cache location you can see the remains of one of the strong points which is a pill box and is on the far side of Newmarket road. In this area the tank ditch ran from the road bridge where the Newmarket road crosses the railway, it ran SW towards Westley before turning S and then SE to join the river Linnet. On the other side of the road the ditch followed the railway. If England was invaded the defences could be manned by up to 1150 soldiers: 400 from A Company, 2nd Suffolk Home Guard. A further 700 who were in training at No 3 infantry training centre that occupied sites on either side of the Newmarket road. The last 50 would come from the ROC but only if they could not carry out there normal duties. Β Google Earth has 1945 imagery of this area and the tank ditch is clearly visible in the this area. Β This cache is not accessible from Newmarket road, you must be in the field. parking is available on Bennett road which runs parallel to the Newmarket road Due to a couple of mugglings I have moved GZ, swapped the container for a micro and made this a premium cache.
