Rolland’s Bench in Sam’s Park Traditional Cache

The last time I was up here in Sam McDonald Park I deviated from my normal route and took an alternate path. Instead of walking the Towne Fire Road I caught the short crossover trail to the Brook Trail Loop. And there I discovered a new memorial bench.

This one was placed to honor the memory of Rolland Baker. With a little research I learned that Mr. Baker was an avid hiker - and that he’d died on a group hike in nearby Purisima Redwoods Park. As someone who spends a lot of time in our marvelous park system it seemed to me that his passing while doing what he loved was extremely fitting. And that someone was caring enough to dedicate a bench to his memory, one that you can only find while walking in the woods, is incredibly kind. I only hope that when my turn comes my family and friends will do something similar for me.

So the next time you’re out here in one of the prettiest places on our planet please take the time to stop by Rolland’s bench. Sit a spell, enjoy the view and thank him and his folks for this grand memorial.
