This is an easy cache, suitable for beginners and children. It is located on the grounds of the Rockwood Manor Park which is owned and operated by Montgomery Parks, part of the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission.
Rockwood Manor was built by Carolyn Gangwer Caughey (pronounced "Coy") in the 1920s as her country estate. Her will gave the manor and estate to the Girl Scouts of America to provide a retreat and camping facility so troops could visit the nation's capitol. From 1939 until 1979, "Rockwood" served as a gathering place for local, national and international Girl Scouts and Girl Guides. Day and overnight camping, program events and meetings filled the crowded calendar. Rockwood was established as a Girl Scouts of the USA National Center in 1952.
Girl Scouts in the area objected strongly when the national organization set out to break the will and sell the property to a local developer. A compromise preserved 30 acres of land, the manor house, the cottages, and ampitheater as a park. There was a condition that the housing development could not use Rockwood in its name; it was named Woodrock.
