Highway E4 had its old route past this place and through the most central parts of Gävle — south towards the swedish capital Stockholm - north towards Haparanda and Finland.
Please, Do NOT Park or walk on these busy roads!

The boulevard streets 'Norra Kungsgatan' and 'Södra Kungsgatan' through central Gävle was a part of this highway from 1945 until 1980. The first years until 1962 it was called Riksväg 13 or 'tretton'. Then it became "European 4" or 'E-fyran'.
E4 is a vital traffic route all through Sweden. From Copenhagen in Denmark, through central parts of southern Sweden, up to our capital. Northerly, past this point in Gävle, and continued north along the beautifully scenic route next to the baltic sea all the way to Haparanda nearby the Finnish border.
During many years its route was through the central parts of many of swedish cities. It caused a lot of queuing and delays for traffic to have this important highway crossing the rail way tracks at many places, including the one a little bit south of this cache location at 'Norrtull'.
Traffic in Sweden used to be on the left hand side of all roads (just like in Great Britain), but since the 3rd of september 1967, we now drive on the right hand side.
In 1980 the E4 got its new, existing route, a little bit to the west side, outside the central city, a bit from residential areas, in a much more modern design, to reduce traffic jams and increase safety for all travellers.
