ABOUT THE LOCATION
The White Elephant monuments sit ungloriously in a traffic island next to the small Chang Phuak bus station. The two elephant statues were built around year 1390, but were moved and rebuilt by the famous military ruler Kawila in 1800. The earlier statues are believed to have commemorated the deeds of two soldiers who carried King Saen Muang Ma to safety after his army attacked Sukhothai forces and were defeated in 1387-8. These servants were rewarded with the titles of 'Lord Elephant' and honored with a statue of a elephant.
