Waterbay Point Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Albany Canucks: After a series of DNFs, it looks like this cache has sadly gone walkabout. It will be too long before I'm back in the Albany area to replace it, so I'll have to archive it.

Over 300 finds in nearly ten years has made it well worthwhile, and I hope all the geocachers who went hunting for this cache enjoyed the superb location!

Geocache Description:

A rocky peninsula with beautiful views of Whalers Beach and Cheyne Beach, and the entire Frenchman Bay area.

Waterbay Point, sometimes also called Frenchman Bay Pensinsula, is part of the Frenchman Bay area, and is the correct name for the rocky peninsula between Whalers Beach on the west and Whale World West Beach on the east. Whalers Beach is more commonly called Frenchman Bay Beach, and is one of the most popular beaches in the area, with toilets and BBQ facilities available. It's a great spot for swimming and snorkeling, and there are ruins of a Norwegian whaling station from 1916 right on the beach. The beach on the other side is less well known, but begins at Waterbay Point and stretch east from here to Whale World, a popular tourist attraction. To whet your appetite for the area, see some of the information here:
http://www.rainbowcoast.com.au/areas/albany/frenchmanbay.htm

GZ will take you to the end of the granite rock peninsula that is on the east side of Frenchman Bay Beach. A short stroll along the rocks will give you good views of both beaches. The large rock towards the west is known to locals as "Bombie Rock", and is a choice spot for fishing, and in the summertime youth are known to use it as a launching pad for bombies into deep water. If you're feeling adventurous, you can walk along the rocks in the other direction to Whale World West Beach, where there is a staircase leading up from the beach back to the main parking area. It's certainly worth taking the time to explore Waterbay Point and enjoy the views, because most tourists never make it any further than Frenchman Bay Beach. You can see all the way to Albany, as well as look out towards the islands in King George Sound.

To get here, take Frenchman Bay Rd all the way to the very end, until the asphalt parking lot overlooking Frenchman Bay Beach. Take the gravel track on the right hand side of the toilets, and that will lead you to a clearly marked parking area where you can leave your vehicle (S 35° 05.476 E 117° 57.047). From here it's only a short walk along a clearly marked track to GZ. There is no need for any bush bashing, because the trail will take you all the way to the rocks at the end of Waterbay Point, where the cache is hidden.

Cache is a clear plastic 200ml sistema container. We have deliberately made it easy to find, because this cache is all about the location, and we placed it here to share another jewel of the rainbow coast, and to help bring other geocachers here to enjoy this wonderful location.
