Geocache Description:

The cabin we went in search of and found.

The day starts out with the son of two RMD members wanting to go out for a hike and possibly hide a cache, the afternoon. We decided on Hayden Pass because when we were up here a couple months ago we saw the remnants of an old cabin that we wanted to check out. We loaded up our trusty jeep “rubi” up with our lunch, coats, cameras and water. Once we reached the beginning of the Hayden Pass trailhead we noticed a little snow on the road. I asked everyone “what do you think”? nobody said anything, so I put Rubi into 4 wheel high and so our adventure started. I was a little worried on what the rest of the trail would look like. Once we got on the sunny portion of the mountain it was not all that bad. We did hit more snow on the trail. The higher we went the more we encountered. But we did manage to get to where we wanted to go. It was probably a good thing because the trail was looking really slick from this point on and the snow was deeper on the trail. Not a good combination with all the rocks on the trail. Plus nobody knew that we came up here. We all got out of Rubi and walked over to the cabin, well what was left of it. The wall were only about knee high. You can see where it had collapsed and took some pictures of it. At almost 10,000 ft. it was pretty windy and cold up here. My son and I searched for a good location far enough off the trail to hide a cache. All I had for a container was a full chapstick tube. We cleaned out the Chapstick out of the tube and put a piece of paper in it for a log. Than we found that perfect tree to hide it in. Are you kidding me you really thought a DGS member would hide a micro out in the woods. Think again! Depending on what season it is and how you choose to go, whether it’s hiking or 4wd vehicle will determine your difficulty and terrain. If you are going to drive you will need to have 4wd. If you choose to hike to the cache be sure to have plenty of water and layers of clothing, as we know in Colorado the weather can change in an instant. This cache will be worth logging. You will love the spectacular views. Don’t be alarmed when you find the cache. A little something to spruce up the container. Look forward to hearing about your adventure and seeing the photos you post. As always be careful and happy caching!
