Geocache Description:

This cache will bring you near the former location of the Brooklyn Hills Station on the New York and Rockaway Beach Railway. The cache is in Forest Park, which is adjacent to the abandoned railroad right of way.

The New York and Rockaway Beach Railway was built between 1878 and 1880. It quickly went bankrupt and was purchased by the Long Island Railroad. It eventually became known as the Rockaway Beach Branch.

The Long Island Railroad ran trains between Penn Station and the Rockaways until 1950, when the wooden trestle over Jamaica Bay was destroyed by fire. Soon after that, the MTA purchased the southern portion of the branch, rebuilt the bridge over Jamaica Bay and extended the A Train service to the Rockaways. The northern section of the branch, (where the cache is located) was abandoned in the 1960s.

The Brooklyn Hills Station, which was very near the cache, at the intersection of Myrtle Avenue, was only used from 1882 until 1911, when it was demolished and replaced by the Brooklyn Manor station, at Jamaica Avenue.

For more interesting information about the railroad, see: (visit link)

There is debate about the possibility of restoring and reopening the abandoned section of the line for passenger train service. There are also people who would like the line to be converted into a linear park, which would be called the Queensway. (visit link)
