In a recent invitational hockey tournament held in Sweden, the Canadian Juniors, played a number of Scandinavian teams in what was supposed to be friendly games. Because of the larger IIHF ice surface and rules, the Canadians got off to a slow start, losing the first two games. However, in one very memorable game against Norway, an old fashioned brouhaha erupted in the first period after one Norwegian player commented that the Canadians were as graceful as a three-legged moose on ice, sparking a retaliatory comment that the Norwegians were as odiferous as lutefisk. Soon the gloves were off and the fists were flying. After a grueling two and a half hours and a number of player ejections, the Canadians came out on top 3-2 in a shoot-out. From there they went on the win every other game they played and eventually the tournament.
Here is a break-down of what the referees called during the altercations to be recorded on the official game sheet.
