Geocache Description:

The cache is NOT at the posted coordinates, but they can be used for parking. This is a simple field puzzle and orienteering-inspired cache. You will need to know how to use your GPS to project a waypoint. Bring your own writing instrument to sign the log.

This is my cache. I stole it fair and square…

In July of 2013, I found a cache container that must have been hidden by Dreamcacher V and then forgotten. I speculate it was hidden 9/13/2010 along with several others that were published. How do I know it was by DCV? Well, the distinctive, excellent camouflage, the trademark purple peace beads, the “We Arrgh NTx” pathtag, and a pristine green log sheet. (I signed the log, but ignore my signature.) This cache was too good to waste, so I am sharing it with you… the lost container.

How do you get to the cache? Well, I’ll tell you. The hike is less than two miles round trip. When projecting waypoints, use a reference of true north and not magnetic north.

Follow these steps to get to the cache:

1) Power poles – Near the parking coordinates is a power pole (#1). Follow the line of power poles down the hill into Muddy Creek Preserve. Count the number of power poles as you go. Stop when you get to the power pole where the power lines make a 60 degree bend to the right. Make note of its number in the line (e.g., “second” = 2), as that number is “A”. Continue counting power poles until you get to the last one. Make note of its number in the overall sequence, as that number is “B”. Stop and look around for the next landmark.

2) Light pole – Look for an old outdoor light fixture on a pole. Proceed to the light pole. Project a waypoint 189 feet on a bearing of 193 degrees to get to the next landmark.

3) Leaning Metal Post – Look for a leaning metal post that is out in the open by itself. It has a loop of barbed wire on top. When you arrive at the leaning post, look 20 feet to your left for a group of wooden posts. Count the number of posts, as that number is “C”. To get to the next landmark, start at the leaning metal post. Project a waypoint at a distance of 0.13 miles or 686 feet on a bearing of 165 degrees.

4) Leaning Mesquite Tree – If you have projected your waypoint correctly, you will be standing at a mesquite tree with the most pronounced lean of any mesquite trees in the area. Count the number of trunks on this tree, as this number is “D”. (Each trunk is approximately 4 inches in diameter.) Stand at the leaning mesquite tree and continue on the previous bearing for 304 feet to reach the next landmark.

5) Big Elm Tree – This is a large, lone elm tree that is not along the fence line. Proceed to the big elm tree and look around for the next landmark.

6) The “entry” point – Look 95 feet away for an “entry” point to the cache location. The “entry” is between two elm trees. Proceed to the entry.

7) The cache location – You are almost there. Write down your values for A through D and make a couple of easy calculations.

A = ___

B = ___

C = ___

D = ___

E = B – C  = ___

F = A + C + D = ___

The cache is located at N32 57.AE9   W96 33.DF9

If you want to check your work, do two more calculations and project a waypoint from the entry point.

G = A + C + D - B = ___

H = ( A x B x C x D ) + 4 = ___

The cache is located at a distance of  GEF feet on a bearing of H degrees.

Now locate the cache, sign the log and put it securely back in place.

If you have a favorite DCV geocache or caching story, feel free to mention it in your online log entry. I hope you enjoy this stroll through the Muddy Creek Preserve.

Congratulations to J27Smith for FTF!
