Situated at a vantage point that gives great views of both the dam and the start of the lake behind it.

Benmore Dam is the largest dam within the Waitaki Power Scheme, there are eight other power stations in the valley.
The dam is the largest earth-filled water retaining structure in New Zealand.
Its core is low permeability clay material and the capacity of the lake is 12.5 million cubic metres, about 1.5 times as much water as Wellington Harbour.
Benmore is the terminus of the HVDC link to Haywards near Lower Hutt.
The dams spillway is spetacular when by passing water from the dam and is designed to take up to 10 times the Waitaki Rivers mean flow.
