This cache is all about roads.... but placed specifically for those walking the Hadrian's Wall walk. So can be grabbed as a walk-by, or cycle-by, as its on a public bridleway, or even a drive-by, as its only a couple of minutes walk from the nearest accessible road.
It might look like its on the main road, which is the relatively new Crosby-on-Eden bypass, but it is in fact on the bridge over it carrying the public footpath! So please do not park on the main road, as it is fast and dangerous, there is no room for parking and no access up to the footpath there. Walking the wall you will come to the cache no problem, by car, best to go to High Crosby to the start of the footpath, which I've marked with a Waypoint/Trailhead.
This point marks not just the 'old road' through Crosby, but the REALLY old road, the Roman Stanegate, or 'Stone Road' which is believed to pre-date even Hadrian's Wall, but has been linked to the Wall ever since the Romans withdrew from what is now Scotland and constructed Hadrian's Wall. The Stanegate is believed to have been originally built to link the forts at modern day Carlisle and Corbridge, and runs parallel to Hardian's Wall the whole way, which is just to the north.
If you are walking the Wall route, here, through Crosby, you will not be on the Wall, which is a little distance to the North, but walking along the route of the Stangate, which unlike most Roman roads, was not built straight, but meandered along the easiest route! It was generally 6.7m (22 ft) wide and gravel covered. It was later used as the foundation for the Carelgate or Carlisle Road, and now relegated to a simple by-passed back road.....
So enjoy the view down from the bridge of the newest road here which is just part of the ongoing history over the many centuries of roads passing through this area.
You are looking for one of those almost extinct 35mm film containers, which had a Billion Dollars in it for FTF prize, but thats long gone now!
