Blaine, St. Clair County: the first land purchase here was made by Thomas S. Knapp, of Detroit, in 1828; on his land he built a sawmill which Judge Zephaniah W. Bunce operated for a while; the township was organized in 1866 and named for General (later President) U.S. Grant; from its location in it the village took theย name Grant Center; but there was another Michigan post office with that name and so Frank Brothwell and others here got one named for Republican U.S. Senator James G. Blaine in 1879, with John T. Dawson becoming its first postmaster on Nov.28, 1879, the office operating until Dec. 31,1960 [Roy Brothwell; Jenks; PO Archives].
