Pare che una primissima fortificazione si trovasse sul monte Quarin, ove si collocò l'originario castello di Cormons fin dalla Prestoria e che divenne poi centro celtico e quindi castrum romano. Attorno al secolo X, accanto all'originario castello ne sorse un altro e, ai piedi del monte, si ampliò la villa, contesa a lungo tra i patriarchi e i conti di Gorizia.
Nel secolo XII essa fu fortificata con due cinte murarie, delle quali si ritrovano oggi alcuni resti; nel 1497 passò alla Casa d'Austria e, nel 1511, fu conquistata dalle truppe veneziane che distrussero il castello e iniziarono poi la ricostruzione della rocca, della quale rimangono resti tali da consentire la lettura della sua antica forma circolare.
