Geocache Description:

The Cache is at the posted coordinates. The following doesn't have to be read, but i highly suggest you do.

The Drake equation is a probabilistic argument used to estimate the number of active, communicative extraterrestrial civilizations in the Milky Way galaxy. The equation was written in 1961 by Frank Drake not for purposes of quantifying the number of civilizations, but intended as a way to stimulate scientific dialogue at the world's first SETI meeting, in Green Bank, West Virginia. The equation summarizes the main concepts which scientists must contemplate when considering the question of other radio-communicative life. The Drake equation has proved controversial since several of its factors are currently unknown, and estimates of their values span a very wide range. Based on the recent surge of data from extrasolar planet hunts, present guesses as to these values as roughly 420 advanced technological civilizations in the Milky way galaxy, with an average spacing between them of 3210 light years.

where:

N = the number of civilizations in our galaxy with which radio-communication might be possible (i.e. which are on our current past light cone);

and

R* = the average rate of star formation in our galaxy
fp = the fraction of those stars that have planets
ne = the average number of planets that can potentially support life per star that has planets
fl = the fraction of planets that could support life that actually develop life at some point
fi = the fraction of planets with life that actually go on to develop intelligent life (civilizations)
fc = the fraction of civilizations that develop a technology that releases detectable signs of their existence into space
L = the length of time for which such civilizations release detectable signals into space

Of course we will never know the actual values for the Drake variables until we either gather the data ourselves, or start talking to some aliens near by that may give us a better idea about how life outside of earth actually works.

For those who do study instances of the unexplained, and unbelievable, The documented number of species that visit earth on a regular basis is about 10, with documented encounters ranging from 40 to 60 additional species. This cache is dedicated to three of those species.
