Nøkken er en nifs, mannlig vette som holder til i elver, tjern, vann og sjøer i innlandet. Figuren er kjent fra nordisk folketro og diktning siden norrøn tid. Nøkken er en personifisering av det farlige ved vannet og kan vise seg i forskjellige skikkelser. Vanligvis prøver han å lokke folk til seg for å drukne dem.
