Geocache Description:

The cache is not at the published coordinates.  Locate the answers to the questions and the cache location will be revealed.

I was one of two daughters born in Italy to a wealthy family.

A strong willed, tough and driven woman I rebelled against society’s expectation of being an obedient wife. I had a gift for mathematics, particularly statistics, thanks to my father’s tuition.

I chose instead a career that had a poor reputation, worked by uneducated women. This decision caused huge upset and distress to my family.

I rejected a proposal of marriage from a future Baron convinced I would not be able to pursue my true calling. I was able to live independently thanks to an annual gratuity from my father.

I spent time training in Germany before returning to England. My travels were to continue a year or so later when I, and a group of women, made huge contributions during a time of war, working in appalling conditions.

I returned to England to public recognition and fame, although I was hardly seen in public. I was a prolific author who spent much time writing detailed reports and books suggesting continuing improvements to my profession. I was considered an authority and advocate for reform both at home and overseas.

I never married and after ill health over many years was bedridden in my later life although I continued working.

I was awarded the Order of Merit as well as many other awards and there are buildings and museums named after me. My image has appeared on banknotes, there are statues in my honour and an International Day of ___________ is held each year on my birthday.
