Eschscholzia californica (California Poppy) is a species of flowering plant in the family Papaveraceae, native to the United States and Mexico, and the official state flower of California. A common misconception associated with the plant, because of its status as a state flower, is that the cutting or damaging of the California poppy is illegal. However, there is no law providing the plant special protection in California.
