Beautiful Stanly -- Infrastructure Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

frograil: The area in which the cache was hidden has become non-maintained, and is overgrown and not very nice. Fire ants have particularly enjoyed the site, however, and I think we'll leave it to them.

Geocache Description:

NOTE WELL: This cache is not on or near any utility pole, near a cable marker, near any tower or substation. It is an easy P&G away from all of those things.

You may not realize it, but you are standing within an impressive amount of infrastructure “firepower”. The buried cable marker indicates that a telecommunications carrier has a fiber optic cable that is moving, even as you stand here and take in the view, millions upon millions of bits of digitized information, sound, video, and who knows what else.

The big, tall tower to the west is a modern (2008) data communication system owned by the North Carolina Highway Patrol. When you get pulled over for speeding, and the HP needs to see if your license plate is current and correct, or if you have any outstanding warrants for your arrest (God forbid!), that data exchange may be relayed to/from this tower.

The large, new electrical substation was just completed, and carries vastly more electricity than the one it replaced (you can see the footprint of the old one at the corner to the right of the substation, and the new Google Maps show both the new substation and the footprint of the old one).

All this electrical and data infrastructure is nice, but so is Running Creek Road, which carries hundreds of school kids every school day down to the middle school just to the south. Quality of life is important, and with modern infrastructure like this, Stanly County is a beautiful place to be!
