Motorscout Down

Detective and Motorscout Claude Snider and his partner Garland Tanner had just finished working security at a Friday night football game when they responded to a call at the University of Alabama. A female student reported that a man was holding her male friend at gunpoint demanding money. She told them that the bandit was holding her boyfriend hostage until she went home to get some money for his release. The bandit was demanding $2.00. The motorscouts left her and started in pursuit in the direction of Comer Hall. They encountered the bandit holding his pistol to the head of the student, Leonard Allman. A gun fight ensued, Snider firing once, Tanner 5 times and the bandit 6 times; all at close range.

Motorscout Snider was hit in the left temple. Motorscout Tanner was shot in the jaw and neck. The bandit, William Ash was shot in the abdomen. Leonard Allman, the student, was not wounded.

Motorscout Snider “died with his boots on” where he was shot. The bandit died 30 feet away. Motorscout Tanner was taken to the hospital where he recovered from his wounds.

Motorscout Snider was honored with packed sanctuary at his funeral service at Flatwoods Baptist Church and was laid to rest in the cemetery beside the church. The bandit’s body was sent to Demopolis for burial.
