Geocache Description:

This cache is located along US 52, several miles northwest of I-74. From the GZ one has a view of an open stretch of right-of-way of the Indiana and Ohio Railroad, hence the name.  I am a closet railfan, incidentally, so this one's dear to my heart!!!   The hide is a park and grab, and shouldn’t be too hard.

CAUTION:  ALWAYS BE CAREFUL PULLING OFF OR ONTO THE HIGHWAY!! It seems as if everybody is always on their way to a fire or something!!??

NOTE: The cache is NOT located on the railroad right-of-way, and you do not have to go there to access it. Railroads were among the first organizations in the nation to develop safety programs...and for a good reason!!!

An I&O Train near Hooven, Ohio - February 2008

The Indiana and Ohio Railroad (standard federal reporting mark INOH) is a subsidiary of the larger entity the Indiana and Ohio Railway (reporting mark IORY).  The parent company operates 570 miles of track in Ohio, southern Michigan, and parts of southeastern Indiana.  It is presently owned and operated by Genesee & Wyoming, who acquired the railroad in its 2012 purchase of RailAmerica.  The road's traffic comes mainly from grain, lumber products, metals, and chemical products; it hauled around 62,000 carloads in 2008. The subsidiary Indiana and Ohio Railroad was formed in 1978 out of what was then the Whitewater division of the New York Central, and runs between Valley Junction, Ohio and Brookville, Indiana,.  It presently operates a train to Brookville several times a week or more to carry aggregates to the Owens Corning factory. The trains generally run up to Brookville in the mid-morning, then back down the valley in the early-afternoon.

UPDATE: A while back, there were significant washouts of the US52 and I&O rights-of-way between West Harrison and Brookville; although the highway has since been repaired and reopened, the railroad is still shut down and all trains to Brookville have ceased running pending repair.
