Geocache Description:

A pleasant bush walk with a nice view.

This cache has been placed at the end of the Cowan Trail. On the way to GZ you will have enjoyed a bushwalk on a level maintenance trail. With luck you will have seen some local wildlife.

Near GZ is the Spirits Rock which was a special place for the original inhabitants of the area and has some wonderful rock carvings. Please do not touch the rock carvings or seek to "enhance" them.

If you stop along the trail at S33° 39.175' E151° 10.496' and look through the bush to the north you may be able to see Cowan Trig (S33° 39.180'' E151 10.470') which was constructed in 1882 by Thomas Charles Swannell, a piling overseer in the Department of Lands.

The name "Cowan" is shared with Cowan suburb and Cowan Creek (which you can see at the end of the trail) but where does the name come from? Some think it is aboriginal for "large water" whilst others think it has Scottish origins.

Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park was dedicated as a public reserve on 14 December 1894. It was the second National Park in NSW (the Royal National Park near Sutherland was established 15 years earlier). On 12 July 2006, Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park was added to the National Heritage List.

The walk is a 8km return journey, a total of around 2 hours walking. This geocache has been approved by the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage and complies with their geocaching policy, meaning no swaps or swag. The container is a 2 litre sistema with a logbook and pen.

Other important information about the National Park is here:

- Park safety messages; and
- Fire, floods and park closure updates; and
- Park information pages.

Free parking is available at the end of Cullamine Road (see waypoint).

Sorry, no dogs or horses allowed on the Cowan Trail. Bicycles are permitted though - makes for a nice ride combining this cache with Wilkins and Long.

Did you know that NSW has a geocaching association? Geocaching NSW aims to enhance and improve the activity of geocaching and holds regular events where geocachers meet to enjoy their common interests. A link to the website can be found here.
