Geocache Description:

UK: Fjordstien and Sorte Bakker

Fjordstien (The Fjord Path) and Sorte Bakker (Black Hills) have throughout the last 100 years been recreational area for both Ringkøbing city and surroundings.

Fjordstien is a 3,5 km combined footpath and bicycle path with an unique course along Ringkøbing Fjord at the foot of the old coast slope.

From the trample paths on top of the slopes the views of the fjord area are fantastic.

The bushy slopes are the highest points along the fjord coast ¬ approximately 9 m above the sea level. The Heart Association uses Fjordstien as Heart path.

Farthest out southeastwards the natural area is called Sorte Bakker (Black Hills). Earlier the area used to be navigation marks for the fishermen at the fjord. At that time the hills were covered with heather and if you were looking at the hills out from the fjord the hills looked like "black hills" ¬ this is how the name arose.

Until the 60ties Sorte Bakker were cropped with cattle and the vegetation therefore was heather, single trees and hip bushes.

Today the maintenance of the area is done mechanically / manually and the starting point is that undesirable trees and bushes should not dominate the area. Especially we focus on rugosa rose, willow, black cherry and broom.

The area from The Town Hall to the old Bydige (The old Village Dike) at Surfpladsen (The Surf place) is comprehended by the Preservation decision from 1975. The preserved village dike dates back to 1790 and at Fjordstien you can see the dike as a deep ditch in the slope.
