Once again we have been out geocaching and discovered a cairn on a peak with fantastic views but no cache. Once again there are no puzzles, no sums to do, just a walk in the beautiful Manx countryside to a vantage point for a fabulous view. And once again there are other caches in the area which could be incorporated into your walk, or you could include it on the forestry warden's walk.
As one might expect at such a location, on doing some research once back home we discovered that there has previously been a cache close by, Eairy Beary . The cache is now archived but the description suggests possible routes to the cache and some interesting information about the area, so worth taking a look, although of course the new cache is in a new hiding place.
The mix of tree cover and extensive moorland in the area creates ideal habitat for various birdlife. It is a good place to see hunting sparrow hawks and hen harriers and, if you are really lucky, you might even see a merlin, Britain’s smallest hunting bird, which is an occasional visitor here. We must admit we only saw a couple of crows when we were here.
The walk is on good paths with only minimal heather surfing for the last few feet. The cache is not hidden in the cairn itself but in a rocky outcrop 27 metres due south. There is a small prize for FTF, which may help you to find your way back.
