jasenjanine: After hearing of the devastating fires in the area recently, we headed out to survey the damage first hand... Sadly, everything within the fires path has been decimated, including the historic Long Gully Bridge [:(]

We did find the ammo box that was originally hidden under a huge log, still there melted & warped from the fiery furnace... There was sadly no vegetation remaining & we were left with no other option than to archive the cache.

Thanks to all that shared our memories of the bridge with us & fingers crossed that one day they will replicate this piece of history [:)]

Geocache Description:


The Captain Fawcett Commemorative 4WD Track begins at Dawn Creek Road and travels some 90km through beautiful Jarrah forests, with some magnificent views along the way. There is also historic farmhouses & even some old trestle bridges made by the original settlers around the 1860's. The track emerges onto the Harvey-Quindanning Road where you can follow past the renowned Long Gully Bridge and ending up in the township of Quindannning.

This fantastic bridge was built for the WA Government Railways in 1849 for the busy railway which was the main method of transport for the timber industry, serving the Serpentine/Jarrahdale area and Dwellingup region. When the Dwellingup Mill burned down in 1961, the track ceased operation but was later converted to road usage. In 1997, the Long Gully (Asquith) Bridge became a feature of the Bibbulmun Track and still forms part of the track up until this present day.



This cache has been placed especially for the Captain Fawcett 4X4 Event at the final destination of our jaunt along the track. You are looking for an ammo box... Hope you enjoy the hunt!
