Geocache Description:

This cache may be a nice break for travellers along the wonderful Milfiord Road with an awesome wee waterfall at the end of the short walk.

It doesnt take too long, but can take longer if you want a spot to relax, or do a tramp up the Boyd Creek tops Track.

I have spent a bit of time in this area and felt it worthwhile to share it with the geocaching community.

Access to the carpark is via a gate from the Milford Road (approx 12km past Te Anau Downs) and is easily identified from the main road. with a green/ yellow DOC sign.  Please keep this gate closed at all times as there may be stock / sheep / cattle walking round. (remember to close on your way out too).  There is enough room to park your vehicle on the road side of the gate to close it.  This land has shared access for DOC and public users.

There is a gravel track that goes for 100metres or so, and then there is a small carpark (where you can leave your vehicle) which signposts a walking track to the Boyd Creek Tops Track.  This is a 6-7km walk with a moderate to steep gradiant at times that takes trampers to the Tops of the ridge through a beech forest with superb views over the surrounding area.  The tracks were maintained by DOC until recent cut backs and are now looked after by local walkers / hunters and a school group who regularly use this area. The track is clearly marked with Orange triangles and is well worth the effort if you have the time.  Allow 3 hours for an ascent and 4.5 - 5 hours for a round trip, depending on your fitness level and baggage.  There may from time to time be some windfall on the track, so be aware of this.

There is also a private hut further along the 4WD track (1km or so) which Southland Boys High School maintain.

To get to the cache descend a wee overgrown track heading right from the carpark (waypoint) and follow the wee creek downstream until you get to a small waterfall. This should only take 1-2 minutes, but the track is reasonably steep in areas so take care. There is also a track heading to the left from the carpark, which is not as steep but also overgrown in places and takes longer.

There are two waterfalls (both are fine for swimming in) and the water is refreshingly cool. I wouldnt suggest jumping off the waterfall as the water level may not be deep enough.  There is a cool pond to sit in to cool down on hot days and wake up in on other days!!

The cache is located at the co-ordinates between the two waterfalls on the left side of the track, only about 5-6 metres from the creek, and a mere 2 metres off the track.

Happy cache hunting and swimming if you are brave enough, otherwise enjoy the serenity!!!

The record for standing under the (cold) waterfall is about 40 seconds. Good luck for anyone wanting to tackle that challenge.

Some swaps started in the cache, along with a trackable who may want to travel a bit further up the road and beyond.
