Geocache Description:

Eoseungsaeng is the second largest parasitic volcanic cone in Jeju.

Eoseungsaeng is the second largest parasitic volcanic cone in Jeju.

On its top is a circular crater with the circumference of about 250 mwhere water does not always stay.

The upper streams of Oedocheon and Dogeuncheon are located on its southwest and east sides, respectively.

There are remains of firearms installed by the Japanese military during the Japanese colonial period on the top, and a well halfway up the hill. Ilex crenata, Smilax china, and Taxus cuspidate grow there, forming a thick natural forest.

A little stream and a wetland near Aerimok is the home to sphagnum and other water plants native to Jeju.

In addition, Jejus indigenous plant, Maackia fauriei (Lev.) Takeda forms a distinctive forest.

The Eoseungsaeng Oreumis referred to as Eoseungseng Eoseungak in the Tamna Sunryeokdo,an album of historical paintings produced in 1702 by Lee Kyeong-sang. Another history book,

Tamnaji, indicates that Eoseungseng Oreum is 25 Ri south of Jeju.1 Ri is approximately 393 m. On the top of the Oreum, there is a pond with the circumference of 100 steps.

There is a saying that a horse only for a king is born on the foot of the hill.

A relevant story has it that an excellent horse called Nojeong was born here in 1797 (the 21styear of King Jeongjo), was dedicated to the royal court, and was in service for the king.

Some claim that Eoseungseng was a Mongolian name of Eoseusom. Others say it stemmed from Olsisim (meaning holiness) or it means literally a horse for the king was born.

This Oreum has been alternately called Eoseungseng, Eoseungsengee, Eoseuseung, Eoseurum Oreum, Eoseusing Oreum, Eosising Oreum, Eolsisim Oreum, Eoseungsengak, Eoseungak, or Eoseungbong.

On its north cliff is the Hanbak Reservoir which water flows into from Eoseungseng.

This reservoir is used for the Eoseungseng Reservoir, a water source for the middle mountain area. Local people call it Eoseungseng as Eoseungsengee or Eoseusingee.

Eoseungseng came to have its current name from its literal meaning that a horse for the king was born.

The name phonetically represents three Chinese characters. The name Eoseungsengee or Eoseusingee can be seen as a combination of sounds and characters.

Seok Ju-myeong (1947) viewed the name Eoseungseng as its Mongolian name whereas Lee Eun-sang claimed that it stems from Olsisim (holiness).

The Oreum stands 1169 m above mean sea level and is 350 m high, 5842 m in circumference, 1,968 m in diameter and 2,543,257m2 in size.
