Zoology - Yellow Bellied Marmot II (MITH) Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Skookum Bear: As the cache owner has not indicated that they have visited the cache location to replace it if it was missing, perform needed maintenance, or verify that it is still there within a reasonable amount of time, I am regretfully archiving the cache to clear it from the active cache database and open the area to new caching opportunities. If the cache owner would like to replace a cache at this location, please submit a new geocache listing and it will be reviewed under the current Geocaching guidelines.

Please do not respond to this note by sending an email reply - your response will go to an unmonitored location and disappear into the ether instead of being sent to me. If you need to contact me regarding this cache, please do so using the link on my Profile Page

McArthur Island Treasure Hunt (MITH)

The McArthur Island Treasure Hunt (MITH) series is a geo-training playground for new geocachers with a variety of cache types and difficulty levels. Caches are safe, family-friendly, and some are wheelchair accessible. All caches promote the highest standards of geocaching etiquette by encouraging cachers to practice low impact caching, respect other park users, and trade responsibly.

Most of all, they are meant to be fun!

This is a
slight revision of the original marmot cache, the cache container has changed.  We have turned this into a full fledged, swag filled, kids cache. Now please read on about our furried friends of Mac Island . . .

The Yellow-bellied Marmot (Marmota flaviventris), also known as the Rock Chuck, is a ground squirrel in the marmot genus that is frequently seen around McArthur Island.
Some say the Yellow Bellied Marmot will eat just about anything. We don't encourage feeding them at all.

A small to medium sized animal, weighing approximately 3 kg.,Yellow-bellied marmots have thick, yellow-coloured bodies and short broad heads. Marmots hibernate for approximately eight months of the year, generally from late September to May. When they emerge from their burrows in the spring, they are in full pelage (coat) and as the summer progresses they molt, or shed their coats.

Yellow-bellied marmots are herbivorous. They eat grasses, flowers, and other plants. In preparation for hibernation they eat large numbers of seeds in the late summer. THEY DO NOT EAT PEOPLE FOOD! Feeding marmots can severely affect their nutrition and their ability to survive during the winter.

The marmots will probably be watching you as you look for this cache if you are looking in the spring or summer months.

Please replace exactly as found to insure it remains hidden from muggles.
